How to Get Answers to Prayers....

Of late, as you may have read in my previous postings I have been interested in how to receive answers to prayers and how to receive personal revelation.  I want to be guided by the Holy Ghost more in my life.  I was given the gift of the Holy Ghost after I was baptized by my dad who held the Melchizedek Priesthood. However, this gift contingent upon my righteousness and faith.  So tonight while preparing my lesson for Sunday, I received another piece of the puzzle.  Isaiah of the Old Testament wrote of the blessings of fasting: "Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy reward.  Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am."

Fasting has always been a difficulty thing for me and any opportunity I took to skip it turns out to have been a missed opportunity to receive answers to my prayers among other blessings.  I love how Isaiah says, "Then shalt thou call and the Lord shall answer."  I'm glad I read this tonight I can think of some great reasons to fast.

Family Home Evening Tonight

Yep it's Tuesday and we are having Family Home Evening tonight cause I invited my friend and her two children to come and Tuesday worked best for everyone.  I felt like I should do the lesson on prayer, but I'm not sure what aspect here are my notes from the things I've gathered from the internet and then I see what sticks.

Poem:
Saying your prayers is like brushing your teeth--
it's a habit you form, a commitment you keep.
You should brush your teeth both morning and night,
the same with your prayers if your saying them right.
Don't let your spirit or teeth begin to decay--
PRAY (and brush) at least twice a day!

Lesson:
Write the following scripture references on small slips of paper:

D&C 31:12
Luke 6:28
D&C 5:24
1 Nephi 7:21
Alma 37:37
1 Thessalonians 5:18
2 Nephi 32:9
3 Nephi 18:21

Have each person take turns looking up one of the scripture references and reading them aloud to the entire group. As each is read, have the group determine what they can learn about prayer from that verse. The following points should be included:

1. Pray to resist temptation.
2. Pray for your enemies.
3. Pray with reverence and humility.
4. Pray for forgiveness.
5. Pray in the morning, at night, and in all your doings.6. Give thanks in your prayers.
7. Pray in the name of Jesus Christ.
8. Pray with your family

Samuel’s mother, Hannah, promised to dedicate her son’s life to the Lord. To keep her promise she took Samuel to the tabernacle to serve with Eli the High Priest. When the Lord first called to Samuel, he did not recognize His voice. Eli, aside of his mistakes, was wise enough to tell Samuel to listen, and answer, when the Lord called to him. (1 Sam 3:9)

After Jesus’ resurrection, on the Day of Pentecost, God bestowed a nother gift: that His Holy Spirit would dwell in the hearts of all thos who accept Him as Lord. (Acts 2:14-33) In this way he also speaks to our hearts and we can have Him with us always.

"Revelation can come hour by hour and moment by moment as we do the right things." Julie B Beck

“In many of the uncertainties and challenges we encounter in our lives, God requires us to do our best, to act and not be acted upon (see 2 Nephi 2:26), and to trust in Him. We may not see angels, hear heavenly voices, or receive overwhelming spiritual impressions. We frequently may press forward hoping and praying—but without absolute assurance—that we are acting in accordance with God’s will. But as we honor our covenants and keep the commandments, as we strive ever more consistently to do good and to become better, we can walk with the confidence that God will guide our steps. And we can speak with the assurance that God will inspire our utterances. This is in part the meaning of the scripture that declares, “Then shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of God” (D&C 121:45).”
“As you appropriately seek for and apply unto the spirit of revelation, I promise you will “walk in the light of the Lord” (Isaiah 2:5; 2 Nephi 12:5). Sometimes the spirit of revelation will operate immediately and intensely, other times subtly and gradually, and often so delicately you may not even consciously recognize it. But regardless of the pattern whereby this blessing is received, the light it provides will illuminate and enlarge your soul, enlighten your understanding (see Alma 5:7; 32:28), and direct and protect you and your family” (Bednar, source).
Nuture Mama does a great job with a FHE on Elder Bednar's talk on Revelation.  She even has  good handout for the kids that I think I will use.

A Tender Mercy

After days of being sick with Bronchitis, we had little food left to prepare a dinnertime meal with and I had even less energy to do so.  I don't remember if it was aloud or just in my heart that I offered a  little prayer "Heavenly Father if it be possible, please let someone bring us some dinner tonight."  Then I went to take a badly needed nap.   Before I was done napping I heard a knock at the front door and my husband (who was also sick) opened the door to find his parents and aunt there.  They were returning home from the family party that we missed the day before and decided to stop as they were passing our house on their way.  They stopped by and brought plates of leftover food from the party.  I was so comforted that Heavenly Father answered my prayer. My family was fed and I could continue sleeping instead of getting up to go fix dinner.  I was able to sleep for a couple of hours and when I got up finally felt like I was starting to get better.

This was a tender mercy from the Lord.  No one but Him heard that plea of my heart.   And it reminds me that He does know me and want what's best for me.   Thank you Father.

Nephi writes, “But behold, I, Nephi, will show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance” (1 Nephi 1:20).

My Little Duckies

When Ducks Don’t Float

We just assumed our ducklings would take to the water. We were in for a surprise.
It all started with the surprise gift Dad brought home to his three daughters. Peering inside a chirping cardboard box, we girls squealed with delight. Baby ducklings! We couldn’t wait to reach in and grab one. We jostled Dad so much, he almost dropped the box.
“Take it easy, girls!” he chuckled. “There’s one for each of you!”
I was surprised at how tiny that little duckling felt in my hand. In my gentle clasp, its warm body felt like the size of a quarter, and it weighed about as much too.
“Wow, it’s so light!” I exclaimed. “No wonder baby ducks can float!”
Dad laughed again as he walked off to join Mom in the kitchen. Dad was big on surprises, especially the ones that made his family smile. That’s when I remembered the wading pool. It would be the perfect home for our new ducks.
“Nora, get that old plastic pool out of the garage,” I ordered my sister.
With our backyard hose pumping clear, cool water into the pool, we began to examine our ducks and set about to name them. Mine had a little speck of brown on his rounded bill and ridiculously giant webbed feet.
Suddenly I remembered my friends. They would laugh at how enthusiastic I was over these new pets. Then I realized my friends wouldn’t be by for the next few days. Their parents had given them permission to go camping in the nearby mountains. Bike riding on an old dirt trail, choosing a campsite, pitching a tent. They’d have a ton of fun and be home the next day, laughing and talking about their campout. My mom hadn’t given me permission. She said I was too young!
With the wading pool full, we girls gathered around, greatly anticipating this moment. We set our flapping, quacking birds on the water and ZOOM, right to the bottom. All three sank!
We plunged our hands into the pool and rescued the poor choking birds. What had gone wrong? We weren’t asking them to do something difficult, like swim. All they had to do was float. Isn’t that easy for a duck?
“What happened?” my sister wondered.
“Maybe we surprised them!”
We all agreed it was like babies when they learn how to walk. They just have to fall sometimes. We agreed to give it another try.
“One, two, three, go!”
Plunk! Plunk! Plunk! straight down like balls of lead.
Fortunately for the ducklings, none of us had the heart to follow through on our theory that they just needed practice. When Nora suggested we use the blow dryer on their feathers, we all scrambled into the house. Gently, my two sisters aired out the poor birds with my pink blow dryer while I looked up the phone number from the name on the cardboard box.
“Hello, sir? We’re the ones that just bought—well, our dad just bought—three little ducklings. Yes, sir. Well, there is a problem with our ducks. You see, we prefer our ducks to float.”
What this man had to say was an eye-opener for me. I didn’t realize I had learned quite so much until I heard myself explain it to Nora and Suzy: “You see, the downy feathers do not repel water. They soak it right up. We have to wait another week or two for their bodies to make the waxy oil that will waterproof their feathers.”
“But that’s not true,” Nora argued. “I’ve seen baby ducks follow their mother on the river. They were just a few days old.”
“The man explained that to me. When ducks are born, the mother wraps her wings around the babies to keep them warm. The oil from the mother’s wings rubs off onto her babies. With their mother, they can stay afloat. On their own, they need to get a little older before they’re safe in the water.”
That’s when my brain trailed off to the mountains somewhere, thinking about my friends in their tent. Maybe Mom just wanted to keep me under her wings for a little while longer. I stroked my duckling’s tiny back with one finger.
“We’ll keep you out of the pool for now, little one,” I promised him. Then, as an afterthought, I added, “Do you miss your mom?”
When I read this article it all made sense.   We weren't going to be able to do preschool for Lydia this year because there weren't enough kids to do Joy School.  I was feeling bad that she was going to miss out this year.  But after reading this article I realized that this is the better way for Lydia this year.  Next year, she will be thrown into the kindergarten "pool" and needs the time this year under my wing to get enough "oil"  to be able to float next year.  It's also interesting to me that it is the oil from the mother that helps her ducklings to float, as oil is so symbolic in the bible particularly the parable of the ten virgins.  We add drops of oil to our lamps through scripture study, church and temple attendance, it is essential to pass that "oil" on to our children.
I'm so glad that I read this article to put this experience in the proper perspective to help me recognize how I need to focus my time with sweet daughter.

Cry unto him over the flocks of your fields....

I am so thankful to know that my Heavenly Father does hear and answer my prayers. We have had a lot of extra expenses on our rental properties recently but we were able to work it all out. Then this morning my tenant called to tell me that her furnace wasn't working. We just had the unit serviced 4 months ago and it is only 7 years old so it should have been fine. But she called to say that it wasn't even turning on. I told her I would check into it and call her back. I fell to my knees and pleaded with the Lord to know what to do because the company absolutely doesn't have enough reserves to replace a furnace right now. I pleaded for His help and then got up and went to call the heating company that last serviced it hoping that maybe their work would be guaranteed and they would go out and inspect it for free. I picked up my phone and my tenant was calling me back. She told me that she didn't know why, but the furnace just switched on and began working again. I knelt back down and thanked my Heavenly Father for hearing my prayer and answering my prayer. Our prayers are not always answered so quickly and directly and I know that and didn't expect such a direct and clear answer, but I needed it. I needed that witness once again that He is there for me as my faith had been waning. I know that my Heavenly Father does continue to perform miracles on the earth today and that he has blessed me and my husband with a miracle today. He is a merciful and loving Father who knows what we need if we turn to him.
It says in the scriptures, in Alma 34: 20,24-25 that we should pray over our flocks, crops, and our fields. My little rental property is our little flock/field and the Lord has blessed us this day.
